Round 5 - Oman Rally

The Sultanate of Oman is a very different place to the rest of the Gulf region. It has mountains by the sea and is strategically placed on the straits of Hormuz at the entrance to the Persian and Arabian Gulf.
We stayed at the new Al Bustan Palace hotel the Sultan had ordered to be built for the first GCC Conference to be held in the Sultanate. At that time, Oman was a long way behind the other Gulf States in terms of modern development and the Sultan had actually deposed his father to modernise the country. In his father’s days the city gates were closed and locked at night! The Omanis were closely related to the Sultan of Zanzibar, Zanzibar, West Africa, hence the Rulers were Sultan’s not Sheikhs.
My friend, Wolf Dieter Moser the German Consul, was the man behind the local Omani who together were the Porsche Importer in Oman, so once again we had good backup from our colleagues there.
We got a finish again but well down the field.
