In the summers of 1974, I was getting restless working for Bill Bates. I wanted to expand the business and get the library service started, but every time we talked about this Bill sat on things. I guess there was a big difference in our outlook with me being young and adventurous and Bill set in his steady ways. It was nothing to do with Bill personally, but I felt the need to see some of the world and it was highly unlikely that I would achieve this working for Bill, whose business was purely UK based. I explained my position to Bill and despite him being very disappointed, he respected my decision to move on.
We remained good friends for many, many years after until Bill’s death in 2010.
