Another big shock for me at AFN was that the mechanics did not test drive the cars they worked on. I was used to test driving all cars I worked on prior to delivering or handing over each car to their respective owner. AFN had a number of problems with accidents over the years and consequently insurance cover, so they employed Maurice Balchin as their professional test driver.
Maurice had apparently worked for H.J. Aldington on his farm and so he was consequently nicknamed “the tractor driver” by most people in the repair side of the business.
Maurice was a steady and simple sole and in the main got by, but I could not understand why AFN had him in this role as his mechanical knowledge of Porsche was extremely limited and he ended up causing all sorts of errors and mistakes, which ended up on the customer’s bill.
